Flying With Your Bike: Essentials Every Triathlete Should Know

Travelling for a triathlon is part of the adventure, but flying with your bike can feel like a logistical workout of its own. Whether you’re heading to a big race abroad or a training camp in the sun, here are some proven tips to make sure your pride and joy arrives safe and ready to roll.

1. Use a Hard Shell Bike Box

When it comes to protecting your bike, don’t cut corners. Invest in a quality hard shell box like the ones from Bike Box Alan or similar trusted brands. They offer the best protection from drops, knocks and baggage handlers with questionable technique.

2. Apple AirTags: Your Secret Weapon

Place an AirTag inside your bike box. If your bike takes a detour or gets stuck in transit, you’ll know exactly where it is. Peace of mind doesn’t get more compact than this.

3. Remove the Rear Derailleur and Hanger

This is a key move. The rear mech is particularly vulnerable during transit. Removing it reduces the risk of damage. Tape it securely inside the box and don’t forget where you put the hanger.

4. Pack It Like It’s Fragile (Because It Is)

Wrap your frame, forks, bars and crankset in foam or pipe lagging. Use soft clothes or towels to fill any dead space. Your aim is to prevent any movement inside the box. Treat it like packing a carbon jigsaw puzzle.

5. Tyre Pressure Tips

If you’re running tubeless tyres, there’s no need to deflate them. The sealant handles pressure changes well. Running tubes? Let out some air to avoid blowouts. Don’t overthink it. Slightly soft is fine.

6. Gas Canisters and Airline Rules

This one’s always a grey area. Some airlines officially prohibit CO₂ canisters, but plenty of athletes still pack one or two in checked luggage. Let’s just say they never ask.

Bonus Tips:

  • Zip-tie your skewers or axles to the frame so you’re not hunting for parts when you arrive
  • Bring a pedal wrench or Allen key set to reassemble quickly
  • Print out your airline’s bike policy. Some check-in staff are unaware of their own rules

Flying with your bike doesn’t have to be stressful. Plan ahead, pack smart, and give yourself time at the airport. After all, the only thing you want to be racing is the competition, not your lost baggage.
